| Understanding Athletic Development through the Sports Mastery Pyramid Model: | |
When designing programs we fall back on this model of athletic development and constantly reference it to insure the safest, most effective progression possible. First we have to understand that this pyramid has 3 sides:
We tried to simplify this 3 dimensional model into a 2 dimensional model that merges the Technical / Tactical and the Fitness. These 2 categories have been separated for years to the detriment of on-field / on-court application of training. For instance, we have seen athletes train in strength and power environments who have become the most explosive athletes around, but on the field they lacked some of the technical skill and situational knowledge to utilize these physical attributes. So we needed to find a way to "bridge this gap" and introduce functional speed and agility into practice while also introducing technical coordination into strength and conditioning. We labeled this program F.I.T. or Functionally Integrated Training and it was the original foundation for AthleteFIT.com our educational resource site and on-line manual for improving performance in sport and fitness. With this model we can progress our discussions in terms of age or when to introduce new training programs. We can also progress our discussions in terms of physical development (coordination, strength, power, etc) or technical / tactical development (motor and manipulative skills as well as situational understanding of the game).
